Dog-Friendly Fall Hikes Near Charlotte, NC: 5 Trails Plus a Bonus

A couple walking their yellow Labrador on a leash along a wooded trail lined with fall leaves

Fall is the best time to hike with a Lab around Charlotte. The air is cool, the leaves are turning, and your dog can walk a few miles without panting the whole way. We've raised Labs in Charlotte since 1991, and after go-home day our puppy families always ask the same thing: where can we take this dog?

Here are five dog-friendly trail spots in and around Charlotte, plus the leash rules, November hours and closure dates to know before you go. Every rule and date comes from the park's own website, checked October 28, 2026. Schedules can change, so check the official page before you head out.

Before You Go: Leash Rules Around Charlotte

Leashes are required at every stop on this list. Under Charlotte-Mecklenburg's leash law, dogs in public parks (other than designated dog parks) must be leashed and under physical restraint at all times. A leash that isn't clipped to your dog doesn't count. Fines start at $50 for a first violation and go up to $500, plus permanent seizure of the animal, for a fifth.

On greenways and in state parks, the leash can't be longer than 6 feet. Mecklenburg County asks greenway walkers to keep dogs on a leash of 6 feet or shorter, walk them on the right edge of the trail and pick up after them. North Carolina State Parks set the same 6-foot limit and ask hikers with pets to yield to all other trail users, including bicyclists and horseback riders.

The sun sets earlier now. Daylight saving time ends Sunday, November 1, 2026, so sunset comes about an hour earlier. Mecklenburg County's trails are open from sunrise to sunset, and both state parks below close their gates at 6 p.m. in November.
